Makino Botanical Garden

The Makino Botanical Garden was opened in 1958 to honor the Kochi-born, world-renowned botanist Professor Tomitaro Makino.

Approximately 3000 different plants, wild ones from western Japan that have a connection to Professor Makino, adorn the garden throughout the seasons. After being designated as a research institution by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2003, the garden has conducted unique research while creating cooperative connections with other botanical gardens abroad.

The “50th Anniversary Garden” in the South Garden displays cultivated plants such as cherry trees, irises, and lotus flowers. The greenhouse conservatory features colorful tropical plants in a jungle-like atmosphere. There are also exhibits introducing Dr. Makino’s life and work, and various special events throughout the year.
